Week of 5/17-5/23: Moving to the Back

Beginners, take a look at the past two weeks on the situations of moving to the back or side standing. If you take them down with a rear body lock mat return, go to the back, RNC

If you get head and arm thrown from body lock position on their side, then execute the escapes from kesagatame and then move to the back and get the RNC, or move to the arm bar. After they can  work back defense or spider web defense. That was Professor John’s recommendation for this month, that we need back and spider web defense. If by the end of the week we haven’t gotten to this, then that’ll be next week.

Also Kaleb will be joining us this week to help out here with kids. Let’s help him out . Welcome Kaleb !

Combatives was great this weekend. Already made some adjustments to make it better, we will refine that one and run it again soon.

Congrats to Moon on his victory this weekend. 2-0 as a pro now. The guys at Rush did great as well going 3-1 for the night too. Good day for the Middle GA Fighters. Now we’re gonna have to ramp back up to train for future adversaries and get some of our students grappling and Kickboxing, but lets cool down for the next week or two and relax and just focus on some of the other things we got going on. 5/1 – 4 year anniversary going to have Thiago Moises and maybe another individual doing some seminar(s) as well as a big outdoor gathering/ bbq at Ted Wright Memorial Park on Moody just up from the academy. It’ll be a great way to celebrate the academy and its students. We also have a Combatives Seminar I’ll be doing on Interior Defense, everything you need to protect your home against an intruder or an unfortunate active shooter scenario.10am-4pm on that one 5/15. Let’s let the students know what’s happening with that. Also I may go to Colorado toward the end of May  to aid with a Combatives course for the Air Force 5/10-6/3. Ill only go for a week -2 max and it’ll likely be toward the tail end. I appreciate you guys covering for me as I get more details.

Also here’s just M-W. I’ll get the schedule fine tuned and techniques in the AM. we’re a little under manned TH/F, but not a big deal, im just too tired to think as im writing this. I hope everyone had a great weekend. I saw some good JJ on the mats last week. Keep up the good work.

Beginners: Hook Sweep Continued

-Shrimp to guard from half guard

-Steering wheel hook Sweep we’ve been working on

-Shrimp to guard from half guard into hook sweep

-Half Guard pass to side mount

Advanced: Butterfly guard to top position continued

Alright guys, lets push the word of the month loyalty hard this month. go in deep on the importance of loyalty and share some insight on who and what you’re loyal to.

Moon is fighting Saturday, Lets fucking go!!!!! I know many of you will be at the fight, as you can see on the schedule we will have a viewing party at the academy for him…no cost. It’ll be on the mats, Projector screen, 8pm is when we will start that. he will likely fight around 10 or after I bet, being the main event, I think 10:30. Please be there if you can’t make it in Atlanta, Let’s really show the love and support to our first MMA Fighter of 2021.

Moon, I threw you on the schedule very little this week, cause I don’t need cranky weight cutting week moon snapping on someone asking you “are you excited” when you’re 141 lbs . With Jara gone on Mondays now, grab that front desk when Jesse is on the mat and sit and hang out. IF you need anything just ask. Ill be around alot as well.

With that said, HOOK SWEEP!!!!!! Since this sweep lands you in the top position, where we recently worked from, continue your half guard passes into mount or side mount wherever you finished up with your crew in march ( I know for instance morning crew goes places the evening crew doesn’t, so thats what I mean) This will be the only time I say this, ever….I’ve seen the 7-9s get this sweep better than I saw the adults in that evening fundamentals….They’ll get it, I call it the scissor sweep of the butterfly guard to put their minds at ease, give it  a try if you’re looking for any edge you can get :).

Sorry for putting this up late tonight, I tried earlier today but we had a web issue. All fixed now thanks to Isaiah.

Week of April 5th: Word of the Month- Loyalty

Hey guys, We got alot coming up. Moon fights in two weeks. This is a taper week for him and “cut” week is next week. Give him the training he needs, but don’t do things that are unsafe. Victory is soon. This month I’m going to operate in the butterfly guard. Week one, hook sweep. For beginners I like to have them start one leg up, one leg down collar and sleeve and steering wheel them over.

Once you get on top, side mount, you guys can move into submissions, even the stuff you did last week to cap off half guard passing to submission. You can also show shrimp to guard  from bottom half guard and how that goes right into this hook sweep we are talking about. I think thats a good setup.

If anyone asks or shows incredible interest in this guard. This month im offering a 5 part Butterfly Guard lesson. I will adapt it for the student, but basically I’ll give them a game. filled with escapes to, retention, attacks, and a game plan. Don’t push it, don’t announce it at class. But after this month, my mind is going to go elsewhere and I won’t want to show this probably. The cost is $500 cash money if you mention it to them. I have one student (franko) who Im going to turn into a savage starting this week. If you’re an instructor and want to sit in Ill have you be camera man or Uke, or fly on the wall. Happy to help.

Word of the Month Loyalty.

giving or showing firm and constant support or allegiance to a person or institution.

Ask them who or what they should be loyal to?

family, parents, church, country, JJ school, school team sport, may come up, please encourage them to be loyal to self. This ties into respect, and discipline(self). One should always be loyal to self and we can do this by not letting others distract or encourage us to deviate to things that aren’t true to our focus.

Week of 3/29-4/3: Spring Break !!!!!

Cruise control week guys. With kids out for school, this should be a break week for many of you as far as output, that said, our adult students its normal to them for the most part, so no matter what you’re doing with your late nights, make sure to put on point classes this week. Offense, Defense, Offense sequences on content this month. Of course know the audience and be willing to call the audible. You can never make it too simple. Let’s make sure to get them at least 3x3min rounds In fundamentals, we could be doing better on that. if they only get two thorough detailed techniques, that’s plenty. they got to get better on the mat. Schedule change will be revealed 4/1, for it to begin 5/1 so everyone will have ample time to know about it. ill make a post in here as well.

I hope you guys had a great weekend.

Thank you to everyone that stopped in to help our academy with it’s makeover. John was definitely the MVP , thank you. We have a new way to enter the mat, so just help the students understand what we’re doing. Adults will take shoes off and clean feet, walk across the mat, put shoes back on, and then get dressed in the back, then they will clean their feet on the other end of the mat and re-enter. Kids can do what you tell them. Let’s try some different things. For instance. the intermediate kids class is today. Maybe we line the little kids up coming in after along a perimeter right after they enter the mat? Let’s follow Jara’s lead on this one.

Let’s continue sequencing and end in a submission. Obviously know the audience. If they do not have the singular moves lets slow it down

Beginners: Sequencing

Focus on putting together some Offense chaining like

-Run the pipe single to 1/2 guard pass to Side Mount Escape >Armbar or triangle from guard

-Run the Pipe Single to Half guard pass to Key Lock/Americana

– Half Guard Pass >shrimp to guard>Scissor Sweep>Xchoke from mount

Intermediate: Samesies (These are simply examples. know the room)

-Double leg>SM>butterfly reguard>Pass>Key Lock

-Double Leg >Butterfy Guard>hop over Pass>Back to choke

-Run Pipe Single>Half guard>Crazy Dog pass hopover>back >guillotine

Cole’s Class with the Kids: Continue Kiss of the Dragon to the Back chokes. If any of the instructors feel comfortable with this, you guys can teach this as well
