October 18-23rd: Welcome Back Lance

I hope everyone had a nice little Fall Break from the kids classes. That was nice. This week lets get back to it with Sacrifice. Ask the students some ways they could make some small sacrifices to help mom and dad out at home. Hold them to it by class 2 and ask if they did those things and encourage them to do that thing all the time.

Beginner Kids, Half guard passing and side mount recovery

Beginner Adults & ADV kids- Dog Fight attacks into top offense

Advanced adults- Top half guard attacks

Week of October 4-10th: Sacrifice

New word of the month is Sacrifice. “An act of giving up something valued for the sake of something else regarded as more important or worthy.” simplify for the little kids. Ask them what are ways they make sacrifices on a daily basis.

Great job last week guys. Self Defense September was a big hit and extremely worthwhile. I appreciated all of the instructors take on it and teaching the things they like to do. The students saw a variety of things, different ways to do things, but conceptually I feel the students took alot from it and I feel better about having them out in the real world.

This month lets get back to Jiu Jitsu vs Jiu Jitsu.

Single Leg takedown to half guard passing. chest to chest. Fighting for the Underhook has got to be the name of the game here. then have the bottom person get the Underhook, forcing the top player to repummel for an Underhook and then get a half guard pass (chest to chest style).  This will lead into dog fight attacks the following week.

Dog fight this week for advanced kids

deep half top vs bottom this week for int adults.

Week of 9/26-10/2: Finish up

Close out on Humility: humbling times. finish with “Have humility, or be humiliated” with the older group.

Self Defense September has been good to us. We’ve done alot.

  1. Getting up from the bottom
  2. Punch blocking closing distance and initiating a clinch
  3. Strikes to offense from Underhook and post
  4. offensive options from double under and over under
  5. Defending rear attacks
  6. utilizing a barrier to get up and how to get off of one
  7. dealing with the sucker punch
  8. Attacks and Defending strikes in the closed guard
  9. Creating distance with verbal boundaries
    and more…

This week review some or all of these key points in sequencing or collaborative Q & A. This was not a month of technique we want going in one ear and out the other.

Next Word of the month for October to think about: Sacrifice.

We are a little understaffed Monday so thank you all for bearing with me. Also, no help from Jara this week just FYI she has covid and so does Kaydyn. They are quarantined in the house, Me & Link do not have it as of now. Keep them in your thoughts.

Sept 20- Sept 26th: What a week!

Last week was intense without some of you able to be in, I appreciate everyone picking up and filling in like a Team!

Really Tough for Amun to put in all of that work and effort like a pro, and his opponent no show like that. Obviously we hope nothing was wrong with his opponent, and if that’s indeed the case, I’m sure the athletic commission will deal a worthy Suspension. Like I say, we can not control other people, we can only control ourselves. Amun, keep doing your thing like a professional despite Georgia’s incapability to produce anyone to show up on weight, or show up at all to weigh ins. You know what to do. I’m sure there will be an event here on the horizon soon.

This week with beginners and advanced kids Let’s do getting attacked from behind standing but then find a way to turn in and face the opponent and loop what we’ve been doing.  Like standing short choke, standing over arms bear hug, standing under arms rear body lock, standing sucker punch from behind, etc.  find ways to hip toss, place against the barrier, under hook and post/frame to attacks, get dropped  and find a way to get back up, etc.

Really proud of how Self Defense September is going.

Advanced Deep Half Guard continues. I have a meeting and some training in ATL Wednesday, but I’ll be back in the evening.

I think Katelyn did a solid job last week, Let her know if you think so when you see her. She still has to take the instructor training module, and I’ll get to that as soon as I can guys. I appreciate the patience.

September 13th- September 18th: Fight Week

Alright guys, going to be a tight week this week, but props to Katelyn for stepping up to assist this week while we need her so Amun can cut weight without snapping at children. With Regard to Self Defense so far we’ve covered distance management, standing entries to punch blocks clinch, Double legs (youth), and closed guard was last week primarily from the knee shield with a collar tie and arm control where we did TSU, Scissor Sweep, and Triangle choke. The guard is very important, so important we need to stay a Second week in a row on it. You can go your own way with the same material with groups that really had a hard time comprehending, however I am going to do that as a warmup for my morning class but move Into, Kimura, TSU, and Hip bump Sweep. You can see that it is very important to have the ability to GET UP to get away or to other tools, GET ON TOP  where you can control the fight, or have a FINISHING MOVE to end things even from the bottom.

Advanced Jiu Jitsu will still be Deep Half Guard. Let’s have lots of energy for classes this week.

I hope to see some of you in Atlanta for Coach Moon’s Fight. If not we will have a viewing party at the academy. Please announce that. I believe its 7PM but we will make a team app post regarding that. Amun has worked super hard and I’m excited to see him do what he does best.

Little Thrashers Kids Class flow. Let’s try this.

Head coach walks the first set of kids back. Assistant takes the kids finishing class to the front>Front Desk worker hands kids to the parents, and does NOT let them go outside on their own>Assistant takes the next set of kids to the back for their class. Instructor begins class while the assistant can go get kids that may be straggling. Also a reminder, we do not take kids into the bathrooms for any reason, anything like that, we get the parent from outside.

Humility: Share a story that was inspirational to you about someone you know or looked up to (could be famous) that exercised humility. For me, I would see someone like Cal Ripken Jr. always thank the fans and give the credit to his team. He’s just one baseball player, but I used to see all of these ole timers getting inducted into the HOF and they were just so humble and always gave the credit away to everyone else.

Also I’ll be going back in in the previous Week post to fill in what all I did with my Monday sequence class which is likely what I’ll focus on with my morning class just at a slower more technical pace. Tune into that in case you need inspiration.

Beginners: Guard

Review Last week as a warmup if need be like TSU’s and such.

Posture Control, Punch Blocking,Triangle Choke

Scissor Sweep, Technical Stand up could also be done in order to blend back into a punch block to takedown from previous week.

Tuesday Am

-TSU warmup

-TSU from closed guatrd

-Scissor sweep

-failed scissor sweep to TSU

-Failed TSU to Triangle Choke

Advanced Kids:

Adults Adv: Deep Half Continued

8/29-9/4: September Self Defense!

Shoutout to everyone that made it to see Jaylin off. He’ll be back, and I’m sure he’ll have plenty to show us when he gets back in a couple years. Also shout out to Moon for covering plenty of classes whilst we had some instructors out last week. We have some more out this week and Joe gonna be getting fucked up as the Uke plenty. Bless up.

With it being September, and kids are finally back to school, many kids are feeling the pains of being back to school and are targets and we should see an influx of sign ups this month. Let’s make sure our current kids are getting what they need for Jiu Jitsu in a self defense realm. There should be some kind of standing every single week. but we will progress to the ground and everything will be strike based even if it’s defensive.

Beginner Kids:

Work on standing up for themselves verbally. This is how KIDS are attacked. Unlike in a combative environment where often we don’t know we’re in a fight for our life until it’s on, kids have some kind of character, even when they’re pieces of shit. They do it face to face.
-Bully walks up on kid talking shit; Kid creates a verbal boundary (stop, or back up) and creates a physical boundary with high hands . takes up to two steps back and begins to move laterally.

-When the Bully gets within hands distance, give a push; Bully comes back at them with the punch, blast double leg.

Even if the kids do the move, it’s not real unless the intent in the double leg is there, be ready to break out the crash pad.  The “bully” in these cases should be prepared to do a break fall and wrap up the Jiu Jitsu kid in a closed guard. This will help us go into the weeks coming forward.

Day 2: Getting up  From the closed guard. Having them do what they did day 1 as a warmup. have the closed guard individual get up from a knee shield scenario. then as a second option work back up to the feet, this can be done with a standing or looming adversary . Eject them with feet on hips leg press. and butt scoot to the wall and do a technical stand up. other bully can rush them with the kick shields to add some “chaos”

Advanced Kids: MMA

I want their Self defense to start the same, but I would like this month to be more like an MMA fight for them, the walls are similar to that of hallways with lockers etc. We will have them doing more punching offensively and defensively. This month will be cool

Adults: Self Defense Punch block to safety clinch, Underhook & post/frame, or Body Lock

know your strengths. Monday I will have us do lots of options. It will lead into many things we’ve been doing lately and have a “sport”(whatever that means) feel to it like leaping to the back mount, and guillotines and front headlock. If you don’t know too much about punch blocks, and you’re teaching or even assisting kids, please come Monday.

Monday Cole’s Class Sequences

-Punch Block >Underhook & Frame> Knee to Osoto Gari >KOB>Back Mount>RNC

-PB>U&F>Knee>Guillotine

-PB>U&F>knee>Standing Guillotine to Ground Guillotine
-Options for stack or bail defense

-After Standing Guillotine >Snap Down>

-Spin behind, or Guillotine, or anaconda/arm in front head lock

Tuesday/ Thursday was the above but also prepped with Side break fall from dead lift position into re-guard and ejection from feet on hips to technical stand up.

Advanced Adults: Deep Half guard

8/23-8/28: Bye Bye Jaylin

So this week is Jaylins last week. We are going to get together and have a going away party for him Saturday Night. No idea on details yet, those will come as the week goes.

6PM Saturday going to Tap & Pour for food/drinks

Afterward likely going downtown macon, or Charlies, or Wild Wing, whatever Jaylin wants to do.

Listen to your body during this season of the delta variant.

The WRPD starts with us this week! Let’s make a difference.

Fortitude: Ask students to tell their own story of fortitude and/or ways they can display it when things get tough during their lives and have them give an example of when they can display this trait.

Monday Sequences

-Sl

-SL>Kick Pass>back >RNC

-SL>Kick Pass>Far side arm bar or Kimura

-SL>HQ>Knee Weave>Back >RNC

-SL Defense>snap down front headlock>Guillotines and front headlock stuff we’ve been doing in the past

Beginners: Mount

Last week we did KOB. show movement to the mount and then get into holding of mount and escaping mount.

Advanced: Instructors choice with regard to what we’ve been going over lately

*FYI: K recently came to us, informed us Brandon McGowan made her feel uncomfortable with a social media DM or something, this was like a year ago or something just before or during Brandon’s deployment. However now he is back.  Regardless, she came to us and said she feels fine being in the same room and taking classes with him, its nothing, but she would not like to be matched up with him to roll at all. So if we could just make sure that doesn’t accidentally happen when were all looking for partners. So keep this in mind for on and off the mats when we are leaving the gym or BS’ing in the parking lot after training.

Fortitude: Has anyone here ever tried to do something, and failed when it counted? taken the lessons learned and moved forward and put those lessons to use when it counted on a later date? tell the kids about it.

I’ll be out of town Thursday afternoon through the weekend for a JJ camp/seminar portion I have to instruct: we still have training TWTH am for the instructors who want to help Jesse and Amun prepare for their bouts. 11:15 amT/Th and 10:15 am W.

Curriculums later for beginners:

Beginners: Bull Fighter, Gorilla Pass, or Leg Drag to the knee on belly, or back position

Advanced: Instructors choice

Striking : incorporate being first, with counter striking with combos we’ve been going over

Couple Things.

Solid Turnout from the Tournament this weekend. Kids and Adults did great(more on that in a moment). We could. not have done this without you guys. The performances were a testament to the quality leadership they are receiving on the mats.

Kids did great

Gold: Joziah, Jaleesa, Mikayla, Brad

Bronze: Carissa(im very excited about her future)

Morgan just went out there and didn’t care nor really try, but he’s getting better…hard to be good when you don’t care about competing.  He’ll get there.

Adults:

Gold: Rex(gi), Jason G.(gi), Dee(Gi no gi absolute for her belt), K(double), Cody E. (Gi, no gi, absolute for his skill set).

Coach Tim R. competed as well. I was coaching when he did his no gi match, I came over in the middle of it.He was so far down on points there wasn’t much to do but watch. He nailed a sick takedown and was passing well when time ran out.

Gi: Some brazilian young man walked the dog on him in the first half of the match. Im not entirely sure points were done correctly , but same story. After escaping a flying triangle attempt the points were so ran up that when he was hard pressed to be able to win on points. He nailed a sick spider “deadlift” pass and then got the back but failed to finish the RNC. finished strong. Tim, Im proud for you representing and you showed moments of brilliance. I think the key to getting past being a slow starter is to just compete more often to be able to learn to channel that get up and go at any time.

Other than Dee, the commonality here is those that competed and crushed were those that come to the more advanced classes….even when its only once a week. Anyone thinking about competing, lets make sure they’re getting the most out of fundamental classes and def coming on Monday nights and open mats os they get the rolls in…anyone that is 2 stripes and above on white belt, they gots to come to the get down classes.

T/Th 11:30 we should be live helping moon and Jesse until their fights drills, pads, light sparring

Wednesday 10:15am pads

Monday Nights sequences for my fundamentals class were
1.Head Inside and Outside Run the pipe

2.Duck under >Fail RBL>head outside SL run pipe

3.Head inside single run the pipe>failed>Tree top  SL

4.Do any they give the back, take the back conventional over the shouilder

5.above but they turn in>far side chair sit to choke

6.They turn in to 3/4 mount,  swing step over the head and get front head lock submissions

Fortitude. : This week share a story of your own personal fortitude.

Guard Passing: Off of the SL takedown Pass the guard and teach some side mount reversals, or escapes that go directly into an attack.

Play some pass/retention games vs a standing opponent

Advanced: Leg Drag from De la Riva Guard and Feet on hips> Side mount>submissions vs escapes
