Week of 1/16-1/20: MLK Initiated Change

Word of the Month: initiate–begin, commence, start, initiate, inaugurate, usher in mean to take the first step in a course, process, or operation. begin, start, and commence are often interchangeable.

Week 3: Let’s tell them that No change small or big can be made with thoughts. Tell how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Initiated great change in our country for equality and upholding what is right for our country as an American Democracy. But he didn’t do it overnight and he didn’t do it alone. Ask the students about some of their plans to initiate change for the better. When appropriate let them know that they may need to seek the help of others to accomplish their goals…that takes humility.

BJJ Curriculum: TD to INITIATE

from the takedown, no matter what position the td you showed led them to….try to get them to get rid of the pause, with drills like from tabled position (jumping to the back) etc. then have them drill the td to that immediate action drill of pass or opening a closed guard or back take.

Muay Thai: (Jesse Fill some basic combo)

Adults:

Circle Up:

Joint Articulation- Individual joints

Mobility- plyometric style exercises

Circuit- 2×3 min rounds total with 30 seconds per exercise. Upper body, lower body, core. one round off. then another with different Upper, lower, core.

Gloves on- 35 minutes left in class

20 minutes of drilling (5-6 x3 minute rounds) Upper body combos *Punches and elbows

Lower body Kicks offense and/or Defense ( for example, one inside kick one outside kick)

Finish with combining punches and kicks simple or not. like

1, low kick, reset, 1,2.

*always Muay Thai Marching

Youth:

Joint Articulation

“circuit”- games, ladder drills, obstacle course, etc. let the kids be kids

Upper body focus- Seated criss cross or kneeling- Upper body strikes to help with details like rotation and snapping on punches

Lower Body kick/ knee Focus specific

Repetition Training/Technical for Punches – This is lining them up like Karate and having them do simple upper body combos or build. 10-20 reps.  this is where they can hold a jab and you have them hold the finishing position to check their posture between resets. then a cross for instance. then a jab cross then a double jab cross. have fun with it.

Combination training:  combo drill in front of one another taking turns 1&1 or 3&3. if the kids are not ready to receive a kick yet. don’t have them. have the other kid spin through on their kick instead of impacting the other child. *****always muay thai marching

also good to finish with bag training.

Word of the Month: initiate–begin, commence, start, initiate, inaugurate, usher in mean to take the first step in a course, process, or operation. begin, start, and commence are often interchangeable.

Week 2: Share your goals and change you’re looking to initiate in your life with the students and then ask if any of them if they have any resolutions for the new year and change they’d like to take the first step toward. Let them know these changes can’t be too big or too small because big goals need a lot of little steps. The best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.

Curriculum: Breaking Grips Standing to standing Rear Body lock (can be via front body lock). to some basic mat return to back mount short choke if applicable to students

Specialization: Standing Outside Passing vs Open Guards

Muay Thai Curriculum style:

Adults:

Circle Up:

Joint Articulation- Individual joints

Hey guys: In Colorado  Developing a combative module for the Air Force this week. I’ll shoot you guys a video Wednesday about some of the changes in more detail we are making to the schedule.

1.Kids classes are going back to simpler. parents allowed only in the back room. I don’t want none of these parents of kids with made up autism in the fucking pro shop saying Gertrude learns better when mommy can make eye contact at any time. . send em to the back. No parents in front room or pro shop.

2. Tuesday will now be my monthly theme (shortening up themed classes once a month to get more advanced content out more frequently)

3. MMA moved to Thursday nights again.

4. Sparring is now Saturday at 10am.

5. Striking is now Muay Thai 3 days a week

Word of the Month: initiate–begin, commence, start, initiate, inaugurate, usher in mean to take the first step in a course, process, or operation. begin, start, and commence are often interchangeable.

Week 1: We often think about resolutions, more like goals without plans…thats a wish. In order to meet our goals or resolutions the change must come with being forward and acting…not just thinking. We need to be aggressive and one way to do that is by initiating the change. What are some of your goals? share with the class this week and next.

I hope to speak with most of you next week about some of the resolutions and changes you’re looking to make currently or in the future.

Jiu Jitsu Curriculum: Positional Drills this week keeping everyone active to just get moving in the new year.

Muay Thai Curriculum: Jesse has new format. I’ll train Tim R. and Jesse up proper when I get back.

Course should be punches to low kick as the theme for combos.

Word of the month: Behavior: The way one conducts themselves, especially toward others. It’s December. What are examples of good behavior and bad behavior? Home, School, our Academy? Spend a LONG time talking about this. pull a dry erase board off the wall if you need to to write these down in front of them? do this at the beginning of class not the end. Get them acknowledging how to be well behaved before the education starts.

Curriculum: Side mount to Mount We should be in side mount via omaplata sweep (or a sweep to pass for kids). We’ve gone over some offense/defense. but now let’s work on positional advancement to the MOUNT! Be ready to stabilize and control while the other person escapes. Attack if your class is ready for it. Key lock or X choke to start.

Week of 11/14-11/18: Escaping the bad position

Hey guys, I had a great time going to see Lance this weekend, he misses everyone. If you get a chance to go to southwest Florida, make sure to peak your head in and check him out.

It’s cool to see him take on a tough task in opening his own school in his community.

Week 3 of Gratitude: I hope some of the kids have at least pointed out the importance of verbalizing gratitude in the form of “Thank you”. If not get them to focus on that, being grateful and showing that gratitude for their meals, the assistance with getting ready in the mornings for school, the parents taking them to Jiu Jitsu, to the instructors for teaching them the coolest martial art on the planet! tell them this week to keep an eye out on all of the things they could express gratitude for and to verbalize that gratitude with a “thank you”

Jiu Jitsu: Escape the bad positions. Sub>Sweep>Escaping the bad spot as it’s happening.

Help them understand that on the way to being swept they already know what’s happening to them, but are waiting too long to start the escape. They can begin the bump/TBR/shrimp to guard escapes as they’re happening. Create a sequence where maybe one guy can shrimp to guard and then re do the sequence so they’re each trading roles.

Jesse competed this past weekend in a last minute grappling match. got tapped out, we will get better.

Lance is doing a seminar at his gym in Punta Gorda, FL. Some have expressed going down to see him. The seminar I’m doing will be Saturday Morning .Look to his social media “revive Jiu Jitsu” for details.

Word of the Month: Gratitude

Week 2: Let them know that gratitude is a way we can feel on the inside, but that we can also EXPRESS gratitude. Ask them what are some ways they think we can express gratitude. The responses should be Verbal, Physical (hug or high five or fist bump for something as simple as lending you a pencil), Gift of Giving (basically reciprocating  in the way that made you grateful) & more

Jiu Jitsu: by the end of this week we should all be caught up with Sub and Sub>Sweep. more intermediate crews we can talk about failed sweeps to subs.

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend. I would like us to do another progression month but this time from closed guard bottom into the top positions. Last month we worked from the top to dominance. Make November a month of FUN. Let the kids play, let them do a lot of drills, make the drills into team games etc.

https://vimeo.com/766126352/3c9320e9e8

November WOM: Gratitude-the quality of being thankful/ readiness to show appreciation for and return of kindness

Week 1: Discuss the Meaning: Ask the children what their definition is

BJJ: Closed guard submission offense

-Armbar>Triangle>Omaplata *option for pit stop

Congrats to all competitors. Here’s what I dialed in on

Kids- When trapped in the closed guard, when our team is the top player, we had no idea how to break grips and open the guard. This can be difficult when staying grounded, we must know how to open the guard by standing up without being double ankle swept.

Adults- Goods and Bads, not my favorite rule/point set, they seemed to be throwing out submission attempt points for pretty much anything and everything. I think a big thing is not pausing in positions. KNOW WHERE YOU ARE AND KNOW WHERE YOURE GOING. You have to believe in your/our Jiu Jitsu. Commit, deal with the consequence after. I saw ATT won all the adult titles, due in large part to us and Rush MMA no doubt. we may end up getting a belt. So great job guys.

Curriculum- Finish any closing mount and back mount offense/defenses

Next month we begin anew.
